Mauritius Will Prevent Iran and China's Influence if Chagos Archipelago is Returned

Mauritius promises to prevent Iranian and Chinese influence if the Chagos Archipelago is returned

The Mauritian government says that if it gains control of the Chagos Archipelago, it guarantees to keep Iran and China away from these areas.

According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, Mauritian Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramgoolam made these remarks on Tuesday, January 29, in response to concerns expressed by some Republican figures close to Donald Trump.

In recent days, several influential figures allied with Donald Trump have asked him to annul the agreement between Britain and the Mauritian government regarding the transfer of the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, due to the potential for Iranian espionage against the US military.

However, the Mauritian Foreign Minister argued that Mauritian sovereignty over this archipelago would place the country in a position to prevent the influence of others in areas hosting Western military bases.

This senior Mauritian diplomat said that such a move would benefit the US, Britain, and Mauritius.
