Is the key to the Ukraine conflict in the hands of Britain?

Over three years into the Ukraine conflict, we are witnessing sensitive days in the pursuit of war and peace, with President Trump’s wishful thinking. Meanwhile, the United States is trying to adjust its relations with Moscow and mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine.

The reality is that Russia’s special operation in Ukraine in 2022 has become the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II, as this conflict has left hundreds of thousands dead and injured, displaced millions, and sparked the most severe confrontation between Moscow and the West in recent decades, causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.

Throughout the war, Russia has criticized Washington for its prominent role in providing aid to Kyiv, and relations between the parties reached their worst state since World War II. However, with Trump’s arrival, this subject changed, and Washington’s overt hostility stopped. Meanwhile, London is fueling chaos and war in Ukraine, and some Russian officials believe Britain is now Moscow’s main enemy, as London is stoking chaos and war in Ukraine, and Britain acts as the driving force of the West in opposing Russia.

In this context, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov introduced Starmer as a factor in fueling tensions at a time when Trump is trying to calm them.

Additionally, Starmer’s recent remarks about the possibility of sending British troops and planes to Ukraine as part of potential peacekeeping forces have angered senior Russian politicians.

At the same time, his hosting of the goodwill coalition meeting and his personal lobbying through contact with Trump for support of Ukraine is also seen as an additional factor.

Britain, which played a prominent role in the early days of this conflict and still staunchly supports Kyiv, has been introduced as Russia’s new public enemy number one. This is because the expulsion of two British diplomats over espionage disputes, along with the threat from one of Vladimir Putin’s close associates to seize British assets in Russia, indicate escalating recent hostilities.

Interestingly, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service publicly announced in a statement that today, just like in both world wars of the past century, London acts as a global war instigator and is trying to derail Trump’s consultations for mediating peace in Ukraine.

In any case, Britain provides training and funding to the Ukrainian army and was the first country to promise Western-made battle tanks to Ukraine, and delivered long-range cruise missiles when other countries hesitated, to target deep inside Russian territory. Another important issue is Europe’s effort towards defense and security autonomy, in which Britain plays a prominent role. In this regard, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are negotiating with 37 countries to create a coalition of pioneers for Ukraine in case of a peace agreement. Also, Britain and France are seeking to strengthen Ukraine’s position in negotiations as U.S. President Donald Trump tries to reach an agreement in the Russia-Ukraine war, and the two European nuclear powers are developing a plan to help ensure Ukraine’s security.

It’s worth noting that the coalition of volunteers includes countries from Europe, the Commonwealth, and Asia, which provide funding, aircraft, or military ships to help protect Ukraine against Russia.

Also, in a separate meeting in Paris, non-NATO countries like Australia, Japan, and New Zealand joined the negotiations with military leaders from dozens of European countries and Canada.

In the effort for peace, Trump recently stated that he had very good and constructive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and there is a very good chance that this horrible and bloody war will finally end. He adds that at this point, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are completely surrounded by the Russian army, and I strongly urged President Putin to ensure their safety, as killing these individuals would be a horrific massacre not seen since World War II.

Additionally, the Kremlin announced on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent Donald Trump his own proposals for a ceasefire in Ukraine through American envoy Steve Whitcomb.

Overall, Britain and France are seeking to prevent the U.S. from yielding to Vladimir Putin’s demands for demilitarizing Ukraine and forcing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold elections before reaching a permanent peace agreement.

In this regard, following the European leaders’ summit in London in mid-March 2025, Starmer announced that Britain is ready to support the coalition of pioneers for implementing any peace agreement in Ukraine with soldiers on the ground and planes in the sky, while European countries must bear this burden, and undoubtedly, U.S. support is essential.

In conclusion, without the participation and role of the London, Paris, and Berlin triangle, establishing lasting peace and stability in the Black Sea region will not be very accessible, as among European countries, Britain has been more displeased with the Kremlin and President Putin for various reasons, especially Moscow’s efforts to monopolize Europe on important political and economic issues, and has a serious will to weaken Russia in the Eurasian axis and balance the great powers.
