Donald Trump, while harshly criticizing Mr. Powell, accused him of being slow to lower interest rates.
On Thursday, Mr. Trump called for Mr. Powell to be terminated.
Kevin Hassett, the White House economic advisor, told reporters that the administration is examining whether Mr. Powell can be dismissed before the end of his term.
Direct oversight of the Federal Reserve Chairman is not within the powers of the U.S. President.
