Former Head of the Environmental Organization Says Iran's Current Water Conditions Will Worsen

The former head of the Environmental Organization says the current water situation in Iran is worsening.

Isa Kalantari, the former head of Iran’s Environmental Organization, in an interview with Entekhab about Iran’s major water bankruptcy, criticized the policies in place and said the current water situation in Iran is just the beginning of troubles and will intensify year by year.

Criticizing the parliament, he added that the parliament has stated that 15 billion cubic meters of water must be saved annually, but on the other hand, it has mandated the government to be self-sufficient in 90% of essential products. Even a second-grade student understands that this equation is wrong.

In part of this conversation, Isa Kalantari pointed to historical mistakes in water resource management and its allocation to the agricultural sector, saying the environmental damage costs of the agricultural sector to the environment are 44 billion dollars annually.

The decrease in rainfall, the sharp increase in temperature, and the depletion of half of the country’s dam reservoirs have brought Iran’s water storage to a critical stage.
