Voting in the Security Council on the return of sanctions against Iran

The voting session on the return of sanctions against Iran in the Security Council was held on Friday, with China, Russia, Pakistan, and Algeria casting affirmative votes.

The United Kingdom, France, the United States, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia voted against, while Guyana and South Korea abstained.

Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s representative to the United Nations, after voting in favor of the draft resolution proposed by South Korea to extend the lifting of sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, stated that this vote should in no way be interpreted as a change in Russia’s stance.

Nebenzya, with sharp criticism of the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA in 2018, once again accused the three European countries party to the nuclear agreement of continuously violating this international document and said that under these circumstances, they do not have the authority to reinstate the sanctions.
