US State Department: You need to pay $1 to register for the lottery

To register for the lottery, you need to pay 1 dollar to the U.S. Department of State.

The U.S. Department of State has announced that starting from September 16, 2025, an electronic fee of one dollar will be collected from applicants when registering for the Green Card Lottery program.

This new registration fee is separate from the $330 visa application fee, which is only collected from the lottery winners and applicants who proceed to the next steps.

According to the State Department’s explanation, this change is intended to cover the operational costs of the lottery — including reviewing registration forms, data storage, random selection of winners, and conducting security checks — so that the financial burden of the program is more fairly distributed among all applicants, not just those who win.
