Some Members of Iran's Parliament Requested Nuclear Weapon Construction in a Letter to the Supreme Leader

A number of Iranian parliament members requested the construction of nuclear weapons in a letter to the Supreme Leader.

More than 70 parliament members, in a letter to the Supreme National Security Council and the heads of the three branches of government, called for a review of Iran’s defense doctrine, emphasizing that the construction and maintenance of nuclear weapons could be considered a deterrent tool.

This letter, prepared by Hassan Ali Akhlaghi Amiri, the representative of Mashhad and Kalat, and signed by 70 other representatives, clarifies that the use of nuclear weapons is against the Leader’s 2010 fatwa, meaning that he only deemed the use of these weapons as forbidden, not their possession.

The signing representatives also wrote that preserving the cherished Islam, which is now intertwined with maintaining the Islamic Republic system, is a significant obligation.

The release of this request comes as the United Nations Security Council on Friday, September 18, rejected a resolution aimed at preventing the re-imposition of sanctions against Iran with 9 votes against. This vote paved the way for the activation of the snapback mechanism and the return of UN sanctions against Iran.
