Release of Two French Citizens from Evin Prison
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, announced the conditional release of two French citizens in Iran, stating that they were released on bail by the judge’s ruling and will remain under supervision until the next judicial stage.
Earlier, Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, announced the release of Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, stating on the social network X that Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who had been detained in Iran for three years, have been released from Evin Prison and are on their way to the French Embassy in Tehran.
He described this event as a great relief and added that he welcomes this first step, and talks to facilitate their return to France as soon as possible are ongoing.
These two French citizens were arrested in May 2022 in Iran and accused of espionage for Israel and actions against the country’s security. The judiciary had sentenced them to more than 30 years in prison about three weeks ago.
In recent weeks, there have been reports about the possibility of exchanging these two with Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian citizen. About two weeks ago, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced that Ms. Esfandiari was also conditionally released and remains under supervision.
