Harsh Criticism from Mashhad Representative: Akbar Tabari’s Release Without Explanation of Sentence Change Path is Unacceptable

Meysam Zahourian, a representative from Mashhad in the Parliament, criticized the Judiciary on Tuesday, December 1, regarding economic corruption cases, stating that the release of Mr. Akbar Tabari without explaining the exact path his case took to change the sentence, and the case of Babak Zanjani, who without fully paying his debt intimidates Central Bank officials, managers, and representatives, is non-transparent.

In 2020, Akbar Tabari was sentenced to 31 years in prison for leading a large bribery network and to 125 years in prison and a fine for money laundering.

His sentence, upon re-examination in 2023, was reduced from a total of 435 years in prison to 125 years and 74 lashes.

He was the Executive Deputy of the Judiciary during the presidencies of Hashemi Shahroudi and Amoli Larijani.

Previously, Ali Shirinazad, a representative from Karaj in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, had called on the Judiciary to clarify the matter in light of the news about Akbar Tabari’s release.

In Akbar Tabari’s case, extensive connections with a network of judges, investigators, economic defendants, and officials of the Islamic Republic for influencing cases and receiving bribes, including luxury properties and cash, have also been mentioned.
