Carney: Canada should reopen its embassies in Iran and Venezuela
Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, said his country needs to reopen its embassies in Iran and Venezuela.
He said the lack of diplomatic presence has limited Canada’s ability to provide consular services to its citizens and respond to humanitarian crises.
Carney emphasized that engagement does not mean endorsement; having an embassy and providing consular services does not mean we endorse that country’s policies.
He also mentioned that a final decision has not yet been made in this regard, but added that this situation needs to change and Canada should move in this direction.
Diplomatic relations between Iran and Canada have been severed since 2012, and the embassies of both countries have been closed since then.
