Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Reacts to UK's and France's Plan for the Strait of Hormuz

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran reacted to the UK and France’s plan for the Strait of Hormuz

Kazem Gharibabadi, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, warned in response to the UK and France’s readiness to participate in a multinational military mission aimed at protecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that this waterway is not a stage for the military display of extraregional powers.

On Saturday, July 4th, Gharibabadi described Iran as a responsible power and guarantor of the Strait of Hormuz’s security and warned against any military movement in this sensitive waterway.

He also emphasized that the security of Hormuz lies with the coastal states and added that those creating crises will be held accountable for the consequences of their adventurism. This warning is serious.

These statements came after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, in a joint statement, announced that Oman has agreed to cooperate in ensuring the security of shipping in its territorial waters in the Strait of Hormuz, and London and Paris are ready to form a military mission with the participation of several countries to support the freedom of navigation in this waterway.

At the same time, Macron announced that the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will return to France, but two frigates’ mine-clearing equipment and a maritime patrol aircraft will remain in the region to help ensure the security of ship passage in the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with France’s partners.
