Baghaei: Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT has become a serious discussion
Ismail Baghaei, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that the topic of Iran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has been seriously discussed in the country’s political and elite circles. Baghaei stated that Iran has been a member of this treaty since 1970 and, from Tehran’s perspective, has adhered to its commitments. However, in return, it has faced the assassination of nuclear scientists, extensive pressure, and attacks on nuclear facilities. He added that the serious question is what advantage membership in the NPT provides to a country that, according to Iran, continues to face threats and military attacks despite adhering to its commitments. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that this discussion is now serious within Iran, but his statements do not indicate that a final decision to withdraw from the NPT has been made.
