Biden Administration Extends Iraq's Waiver from Iran Sanctions

The Biden administration extended Iraq’s exemption from Iran sanctions.

The Washington Free Beacon website reported that a letter was sent to Congress on Wednesday, March 13, which a copy of it was also obtained by this publication. According to this letter, Iraq’s exemption from U.S. sanctions for paying its debts has been extended.

This action allows Iraq to pay billions of dollars of its imported electricity debts to Iran and gives the Islamic Republic access to $10 billion. In November this year, the Associated Press reported that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had extended a new 120-day waiver for Iraq to allow the country to continue importing electricity and gas from Iran.

Four Republican representatives warned on Monday this week that this exemption would expire this month and had asked President Joe Biden’s administration not to extend it.
