American and Turkish officials announced today, Friday, March 29th, that U.S. President Joe Biden is set to host Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the White House on May 9th. This will be Erdoğan’s first visit to the U.S. since 2019, when Donald Trump was the U.S. President.
According to Reuters, relations between these two NATO member countries, which had long been strained due to disagreements on a wide range of issues, have been improving since Ankara approved Sweden’s NATO membership request in January after a 20-month delay.
According to Anadolu Agency, İbrahim Kalın, the head of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization, will meet with some members of the U.S. House of Representatives today, Friday, March 29th.
One of the two Turkish officials who confirmed the planned May visit said that this trip is seen as a window of opportunity for bilateral relations between the U.S. and Turkey.
