Bob Menendez: We are negotiating the sale of F-16s to Turkey
Bob Menendez, the chairman of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Monday that he is negotiating with the Biden administration regarding the potential lifting of the ban on the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, and if a decision is made on this matter, it will be announced next week.
His remarks were made on the day when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to advance Sweden’s membership in the NATO military alliance.
The Biden administration has repeatedly stated that it opposes linking NATO expansion to the issue of selling fighter jets to Turkey. However, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said in January this year that the White House has clarified that agreeing to Sweden’s accession to NATO will be viewed positively by Congress.
