British police say three suspects left the country after the attack on Pouria Zareati
British police said on Tuesday that three suspects, believed to be involved in the assault on Pouria Zareati, a presenter for Iran International, left the UK hours after the attack.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said detectives have discovered that two men approached and attacked the victim on a residential street. The suspects fled the scene in a car driven by a third man.
Mr. Zareati, 36, was injured in the leg on Friday evening in the Wimbledon area of southwest London. Police said he has now been discharged from the hospital.
According to police, the suspects went straight to London Heathrow Airport after leaving the car and left the UK hours after the attack.
Police said it is unclear why the victim was targeted, and officers are investigating the motive with an open mind.
Police previously stated that the matter is being investigated by the counter-terrorism unit.
The attack on Pouria Zareati has sparked numerous reactions, with several journalism organizations and political activists condemning the attack.
Some opponents of the Iranian government have pointed the finger at the regime, but the chargé d’affaires of the Iranian embassy in London has denied any connection between the Iranian government and the attack on Pouria Zareati.
