The Cambridge Dictionary has chosen the word ‘parasocial’ as the word of the year 2025.

The Cambridge Dictionary, a reference for English lexicography and one of the most widely used dictionaries in the world, has selected the word ‘parasocial’ as its word of the year for 2025.

According to Cambridge’s definition, ‘parasocial’ refers to the relationship between an individual and a celebrity whom they do not know personally. This relationship is formed through the works of the celebrity, such as books, music, films, TV series, and the like.

This term was first used in sociology discussions in the 1950s.

In Persian, ‘parasocial’ is translated as ‘فرااجتماعی’ (farājtemā’ī).

Experts say that the increase in one-sided parasocial relationships in recent years has had a significant impact on the lives of both ordinary and famous people.

For example, when singer Taylor Swift announced her relationship with American football player Travis Kelce, many of their fans felt a sense of closeness to each other, even though they had never met before.
