The Canadian Foreign Minister in Ottawa halts arms sales to Israel
Following the approval of a non-binding resolution to suspend arms sales to Israel in the Canadian Parliament, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced on Tuesday, March 20th, that Ottawa will stop selling arms to Israel.
In an interview with the Toronto Star newspaper regarding the halt of arms sales to Israel, the Canadian Foreign Minister said, ‘This is a real issue.’
The non-binding resolution in the Canadian Parliament was approved on Monday with 204 votes in favor and 117 against. This resolution was presented to Parliament by the New Democratic Party, one of the allies of Justin Trudeau.
This comes as the Canadian government had previously announced that requests for military equipment exports to Israel would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The Canadian government had earlier called for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and warned about the disastrous consequences of military operations in the region.
