The Taliban leader: Catch the thief and cut off his hand.
Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, who was speaking from his headquarters in Kandahar on Friday after the Eid al-Fitr prayer, also emphasized the implementation of Islamic legal punishments and said that just as fasting is obligatory, so is retribution, and these limits should be enforced without any conditions.
An audio recording of the Taliban leader’s speech was broadcast last night on national radio and television. He does not appear in public and does not speak with the media. Apparently, this audio was broadcast in Kandahar as part of the Eid prayers’ sermons.
The Taliban leader said that just as fasting is obligatory, retribution is also obligatory. If someone comes with the intent to kill, then retribution for the murderer is obligatory, and to prevent oppression, the murderer must be subject to retribution.
Catch the thief and cut off his hand. The implementation of Islamic legal limits is obligatory, and so is retribution. Cutting off the hand and taking the right of the oppressed from the oppressor are also obligatory, but these cannot be done individually. He emphasized that the implementation of each of these rulings is obligatory in its own context.
