Concerns Over Non-Renewal of Ukraine Grain Export Agreement

Concerns over the non-renewal of the Ukrainian grain export agreement

Although Moscow announced today that the Ukrainian grain transit agreement has ended, the Ukrainian government emphasized that it is ready to export its agricultural products even without Russia’s consent.

This agreement, brokered by Turkey and supported by the United Nations last year, allowed the transfer of thousands of tons of agricultural products that were stuck in Ukrainian warehouses because Russia had blocked their export routes through the Black Sea.

Russia, Turkey, and the United Nations were negotiating in Istanbul to renew this agreement, but now Moscow says its conditions have not been met and the agreement has ended.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian presidency said today, Monday, that Ukrainian ships are ready to move without Russian authorization, provided that Turkey allows them to cross its maritime border.

Experts say that moving these ships without Russia’s consent would be very dangerous.
