Taliban’s Continued Disregard for Iran’s Water Rights: Mehrabian – We Will Not Back Down
As the Taliban continue to ignore the threats from Iranian government and military officials regarding Iran’s water rights from the Helmand River, Ali Akbar Mehrabian, Iran’s Minister of Energy, stated on Saturday, July 15, that they will not back down from the nation’s rights even a bit.
He further emphasized the various negotiations concerning the release of water, announcing that despite the failure to achieve the water rights, necessary measures will be taken to provide water for the people.
This comes as multiple reports of water scarcity have emerged in various regions of the country, especially in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, which is the destination for Iran’s water rights from the Helmand River.
Alireza Ghasemi, CEO of the Water and Wastewater Company of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, told the IRNA news agency last June that the province faces a water shortage of about 65 million cubic meters annually, and all cities in the province, except for a few small towns, are experiencing water stress.
