Controversy Over the Stadium for the Peykan and Persepolis Match
Less than a few hours remain before the start of the 28th week of the Iranian Premier League, and the dispute between the three championship contenders—Persepolis in first place, Sepahan in second, and Esteghlal in third—over the timing and location of the matches has reached its peak with the match officials.
The initial controversy came from Sepahan and Esteghlal, who protested why they had to play on Friday, while the other championship contender, Persepolis, would play its match on Saturday with the knowledge of the other rivals’ results.
This protest led nowhere, and the officials stated that only the matches of the last two weeks of this year’s league, namely weeks 29 and 30, would be held simultaneously as previously determined.
After that, Persepolis, which is at the top of the table by just one point, protested against holding its match against Peykan without spectators and even threatened that if spectators were not allowed, they would not take to the field.
Today, the Tehran City Security Council announced its agreement to hold the match at Azadi Stadium, which also faced protests from Esteghlal and a response from the league organization.
