Danes Dug Up the Pavement in Copenhagen's Drug Dealer Neighborhood

Danes in Copenhagen’s drug dealer district tore up the street pavement

Residents of Copenhagen’s famous hippie neighborhood known as Christiania, which has been a hangout for drug dealers for years, began tearing up the pavement of its main street on Saturday, April 6, hoping to free the area from criminal gangs.

Hippies settled in this area, which was formerly a military barracks, in the 1970s and turned it into a place for the illegal trade of drugs, including marijuana and hashish. Over the years, there have been several deadly clashes and shootings between criminal gangs and police officers in this neighborhood.

In August 2023, a 30-year-old man was killed by gunfire on a street in Christiania, and four others were injured. This was the latest in a series of deadly shootings linked to organized crime. Over the past three years, numerous incidents of shootings and stabbings have been reported in this area.
