The Dark Days of the Internet in Iran

Statistical indices in the summer of 2023 indicate that the downward trend in the fixed internet penetration rate continues, and the download speed on the 4G network of mobile operators has also decreased.

In contrast, despite this decrease in penetration rate, the number of mobile internet subscriptions has continued to increase, and the mobile internet penetration rate has reached nearly 127 percent.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Communications apparently has high hopes for the fiber optic project and has promised that by the end of this year, the fiber optic coverage will double and internet speed will increase by 50 percent.

According to an IT expert, as long as there is no free access to the internet in Iran, the development of fiber optics will merely be a futile and superficial action.

The regulator’s report on the download speed of operators on the 4G network last summer also shows that this speed had a significant decrease compared to the previous season.
