Disappearance of 25 Tons of Uranium in Libya

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported on Wednesday, March 15, that about 25 tons of natural uranium have disappeared in Libya.

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of this agency, wrote in a report to member countries that UN inspectors discovered during a visit on Tuesday that 10 containers containing about 25 tons of natural uranium in the form of uranium concentrate or yellowcake, which according to officials should have been stored at that location, have disappeared.

The International Atomic Energy Agency stated that it will conduct further verifications to clarify how these nuclear materials disappeared and their current location.

The agency added that access to this location requires complex logistics and noted that the lack of information about the current location of the nuclear materials may pose a radiological risk as well as nuclear security concerns.
