Ecuador Expels Mexican Ambassador

Ecuador expelled the Mexican ambassador

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, April 5th, declared the Mexican ambassador as an undesirable person in response to comments made by the Mexican president regarding last year’s elections in Ecuador.

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that Raquel Serur Smeke, the Mexican ambassador in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, must soon leave the country.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the leftist president of Mexico, on Wednesday compared the assassination of Fernando Villavicencio, an Ecuadorian presidential candidate, to the recent violence in Mexico ahead of its elections, where several local election candidates were killed.

Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead last August during an election rally.
