Entry of Balloons Carrying Smuggled Cigarettes to Lithuania Shut Down Vilnius Airport

The entry of balloons carrying smuggled cigarettes shut down Vilnius Airport in Lithuania

On the night of Saturday, October 3, Lithuanian officials announced that around 25 small hot air balloons, some of which were carrying smuggled cigarettes, entered the airspace of this country.

Following this incident, Vilnius Airport was closed for several hours.

The entry of these balloons led to the suspension of 30 flights and delays affecting about 6,000 passengers, and flight operations resumed around 4:50 AM on Sunday.

Authorities managed to seize 11 balloons and about 18,000 packs of smuggled cigarettes. Using balloons as a smuggling tool from Belarus to Lithuania is considered a common method because it is cheaper and simpler than using drones.
