The entry of women without mandatory hijab into museums in Iran has been banned.
The General Directorate of Museums of the country, in a circular to the provincial cultural heritage departments, announced the prohibition of individuals without mandatory hijab from entering museums and historical complexes across the country.
Morteza Adibzadeh, Director General of Museums at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, claimed in this circular that this ban is to protect and safeguard the cultural values and public security of society.
In recent months, despite the nationwide protests of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom,’ the government’s pressure to enforce mandatory hijab has increased in various ways in the absence of an official morality police. Closing businesses and denying public services to women without mandatory hijab are among these pressures.
Meanwhile, legal experts and human rights activists have repeatedly emphasized that such bans have no legal basis.
