Erdogan visits Egypt after 12 years
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, has traveled to Egypt for the first time in over a decade. Mr. Erdogan was welcomed by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of Egypt, upon his arrival. This visit marks Erdogan’s first to Egypt in nearly 11 years and signifies a rapprochement with Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The two countries severed ties in 2013 following the ousting of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s Islamist president.
Since Erdogan came to power, Turkey maintained close relations with Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, but the two countries experienced a tense period between 2013 and 2023.
However, their relations have improved in recent years.
The main agenda of Erdogan’s visit is reported to be the war in Gaza. The Turkish President has repeatedly criticized Israel openly.
