Erdogan’s main rival defended Turkey’s Kurds
Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the main rival of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, and a significant contender for victory in the upcoming presidential elections in the country, accused Mr. Erdogan on Tuesday of escalating ethnic tensions for political gain while defending Kurdish rights.
Kemal Kilicdaroglu’s support for Turkey’s Kurds is not unprecedented, but hearing it from a politician of his popularity suggests that there could be significant changes in the country after the May elections.
For weeks, Erdogan and his supporters have been labeling government opponents as affiliated with the Kurdish militant group, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
Polls indicate that Kilicdaroglu, the candidate of the coalition of six opposition parties in Turkey, currently has the highest chance of securing the presidency. The voting is set to take place in less than a month, on May 14th.
By defending Turkey’s Kurds, Kemal Kilicdaroglu has shown that he could pose a significant threat to the victory of the Islamists and conservatives aligned with Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government in the upcoming elections.
