The population of the European Union will decrease by 6 percent
According to the latest demographic forecasts published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, the population of the European Union is projected to decrease by 6 percent from January 1, 2022, to January 1, 2100, which is equivalent to 27.3 million fewer people.
This long-term forecast for a population decline comes as the population of the union began to grow again in 2022 after decreasing in 2020 and 2021 due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, following Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the massive influx of refugees from Ukraine to the European Union, it is estimated that the population reached 451 million on January 1, 2023, and will reach 453 million by 2026.
However, in this year, the population decline will begin, ultimately reaching the predicted level of 420 million by the year 2100.
