Expansion of European Union sanctions against the Islamic Republic
According to the Associated Press, on Monday, February 20, the European Union will impose sanctions against two organizations and 32 Iranian individuals, including Mohammad Mehdi Esmaili, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and Yousef Nouri, Minister of Education, as well as intelligence officials of the Islamic Republic and members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, in connection with the suppression of protesters in Iran.
Previously, the French Foreign Minister had announced a sanctions package that is set to be implemented during the Monday meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels due to the crackdowns on the protesters of the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement in Iran.
Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, has also confirmed this news and announced new sanctions against the Islamic Republic for human rights violations.
