Judiciary’s Explanation on Issuing Indictments for Pardoned Defendants

Masoud Setayeshi, the spokesperson for the Judiciary, addressed reporters’ questions in today’s press conference regarding the reason for reissuing indictments for some released prisoners, who were mainly arrested during the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.

He stated that a convict or defendant who has been pardoned will not have a case opened for their past issues unless it is for a sentence reduction.

Mr. Setayeshi also mentioned that those who have had cases opened against them have definitely committed new crimes and face new charges.

Last February, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, agreed with the Judiciary’s proposal to pardon and reduce the sentences of tens of thousands of defendants and convicts.

This pardon, which was conditional on the prisoners expressing remorse, was met with a lot of negative reactions.

Amnesty International stated that the pardon agreed upon by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic is intended to quell international protests.
