Fars News Agency: The retribution sentence for the Anzali Port police commander is not final, and the case is set to be reviewed again.
Fars News Agency states that through its inquiries with judiciary officials, it has been determined that the retribution sentence for Jafar Javanmardi is not final, and due to multiple deficiencies, the case is set to be reviewed again.
Jafar Javanmardi, the Anzali Port police commander, during the 2022 protests, caused the death of 27-year-old Mehran Samak by firing pellet shots. Samak had honked his car horn after Iran’s national team lost to the USA in the Qatar World Cup.
Fars wrote that many believe given that this incident occurred during a police mission and amid unrest, a harsh sentence has been issued by the judge, which in practice will lead to the weakening of the police.
Mehran Samak’s family lawyer told Shargh Network that a court in Qazvin has sentenced the former Anzali Port police commander to retribution on charges of intentional murder. Jafar Javanmardi was the main accused in this case.
According to this report, judiciary officials assured that the issued sentence is currently unenforceable, and more comprehensive reviews must be conducted with the completion of the file.
The Iranian judiciary itself has not commented on this matter.
The Islamic Republic uses the term ‘unrest’ for public protests.
