Federal judge rules 9/11 victims’ families can sue Saudi Arabia
An American judge has ruled that the families of the September 11 victims can sue Saudi Arabia over allegations that the country supported the attackers.
Judge George Daniels, a federal judge in the United States, announced that the families of the September 11 attacks can sue Saudi Arabia for allegedly supporting the hijackers from the terrorist group.
The lawyers for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had tried to dismiss the case, which was first brought up in 2003, arguing that a sovereign state is immune from legal prosecution in American courts.
Judge George Daniels stated that the families have provided reasonable evidence showing that two Saudi citizens were sent to assist the hijackers, and Saudi Arabia has not provided sufficient evidence to refute this claim.
The families of the victims called the judge’s decision the most significant step in two decades of litigation, adding that this decision has finally given them the opportunity to pursue accountability and justice.
