The federal prosecution is now relentlessly pursuing Trump.
John Smith, known as Jack Smith in the federal prosecution and U.S. courts, is now the special prosecutor for Trump’s federal cases. He has been working in The Hague in the Netherlands, investigating war criminals, and has not yet returned to the U.S. because he is undergoing treatment for a sports injury.
Nevertheless, Mr. Smith, who is formidable, quickly announced after his appointment, with a statement about his mandate, that he would promptly and relentlessly begin pursuing Trump’s cases. As promised, he has tasked his subordinates with initiating court proceedings and following several specific cases in the courts until he arrives in the U.S.
The speed of pursuing Trump’s cases will be highly significant, and now Merrick Garland, appointed by Joe Biden as the federal prosecutor, will no longer have a direct role in the cases.
