Fire in Iran’s Refineries
Parliament’s Energy Commission suggests possibility of infiltration and sabotage
Fereydoon Abbasi, a member of Iran’s Parliament Energy Commission, said that industrial sabotage and non-industrial sabotage could occur regarding recent incidents at refineries.
According to ILNA, the former head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization stated there might be infiltrators in the industrial sector, and such incidents can happen in any country.
Fereydoon Abbasi mentioned that human error, managerial mistakes, and sabotage are possible, and even if everything is correct, sabotage could still occur. Can we say there’s nothing wrong and security is always maintained with no security breaches? No, we cannot say that.
He stated that out of a hundred attacks that the enemy intended to carry out and were prevented, one or two have happened.
Fereydoon Abbasi talked about sabotage in industries, saying that over time, a person might become dissatisfied due to personal issues or external influences and turn into a saboteur. A saboteur doesn’t necessarily plant bombs; sometimes they engage in industrial sabotage, learning to tamper with electricity, manipulate water, or alter gas pressure.
This member of Iran’s Parliament Energy Commission, regarding the widespread fire at the Birjand refinery that occurred last week, said he doesn’t have data to confirm sabotage. It could be negligence, human error, or faulty equipment.
The Birjand refinery, which was inaugurated last year, experienced an explosion and fire last week. The governor of Birjand announced that all 18 tanks of this refinery burned in the fire.
Today, unit number 3 of the Isfahan refinery also caught fire, injuring four people.
In recent years, several of Iran’s refineries have experienced fires and explosions.
