The Brazilian President’s First Trip to Europe
This is the first official trip of Brazil’s left-wing president to Europe since his re-election.
Mr. Lula da Silva will participate in a bilateral summit in Lisbon and attend a parliamentary session. He stated that his trip is part of Brazil’s comeback campaign, aimed at resuming and improving diplomatic relations with its main partners.
Mr. Lula da Silva has many allies in Portugal, including the country’s socialist Prime Minister, Antonio Costa. However, his recent meeting with Russia’s Foreign Minister and his remarks that both Ukraine and Russia decided to go to war have sparked criticism in Europe. Mr. Lula da Silva will travel to Spain on Tuesday.
