Former Australian soldier loses in Afghan war crimes case

With a ruling from the High Court of Australia, former Australian soldier Ben Roberts-Smith’s legal effort against three newspapers in the country has failed.

Mr. Roberts-Smith had claimed that these newspapers defamed him seven years ago by accusing him of committing war crimes in Afghanistan.

On Thursday, September 4th, the court rejected Ben Roberts-Smith’s appeal regarding the newspapers’ defamation against him.

Mr. Roberts-Smith lost a defamation lawsuit two years ago against three newspapers that had accused him of killing unarmed prisoners and civilians during his service in Afghanistan.
