James Comey, former FBI director, has been charged with obstruction of justice
James Comey, former FBI director, is facing charges of obstruction of justice and providing false information to Congress. Comey was dismissed during Donald Trump’s presidency while investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 US elections were ongoing.
Robert Mueller continued this investigation and found multiple contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials but did not reach sufficient evidence to prove a criminal conspiracy.
Trump and his supporters called these investigations a hoax and a witch hunt, although government reports showed that Russia had interfered in favor of the Republican campaign.
Trump, in a post on the social network Truth, called these charges justice in America and said that Comey has been indicted by a grand jury for two criminal offenses.
Comey declared his innocence and said, ‘We do not live on our knees and should not be afraid. I trust the judicial system and am innocent.’
The charge against him is not related to the content of the Russia investigation but rather to allegedly lying to Congress in 2020 when he said he had not authorized anyone to provide anonymous information to a reporter about the investigation.
