The former president of Tehran University of Medical Sciences says that first-year medical students are considering migration.
Ali Jafarian, the former president of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, mentioned that today there are no applicants for luxury specialties in residency programs. This results in the country needing foreign doctors. It’s not like 50 years ago when Indian and Bangladeshi doctors would come to Iran. Now, they go to England. Back then, they had good income when they came to Iran, but now, why would they come here? We’re leading the country to a point where soon we might not even have an anesthesiologist for an appendectomy in the provinces.
Now, if someone wants to pursue residency, instead of doing it in Iran, they become a resident abroad. That’s why the residency admission exam, which used to be highly competitive, now has 800 vacant seats. I haven’t seen the Ministry of Health deny this, which means this news is true.
It’s very unfortunate that a first-year medical student, who has just passed the entrance exam, asks me if it’s easier to apply for migration with a medical degree or with a dental degree. I’ve seen cases where an intern at our university buys a plane ticket for migration on the day they defend their thesis.
