Former Tehran Mayor's Reaction to Curtain Installation in Metro

Reaction of the former mayor of Tehran to the curtain installation in the metro

Gholamhossein Karbaschi, the former mayor of Tehran, said in an interview with the Ham-Mihan newspaper that segregation and physical confrontations have been unsuccessful in the past.

The issue of segregation and such physical approaches have been tried many times in the past and have clearly failed in solving cultural issues, yet they keep returning to this method.

He stated that force does not yield results. For example, regarding hijab, after passing through the gate, women take off their scarves again. This behavior only turns into a kind of stubbornness between the management of various sectors and the people.

He suggested that instead, more vehicles should be added and the comfort of passengers should be ensured.

Previously, the release of images showing curtains being installed in metro cars to separate women-only cars from the rest had sparked reactions.

With the intensification of government strictness to enforce hijab, restrictions were also imposed in Iran’s metros. Many videos were released showing officers reminding passengers to observe hijab in the metros, and in some, it was shown that women without mandatory hijab were not allowed to enter the metro.
