France urges the European Union to sanction officials of the Islamic Republic
Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Foreign Minister, announced on Monday, January 27th (8th of Bahman), that France intends to propose imposing severe sanctions on certain officials of the Islamic Republic. According to him, these officials are responsible for the detention of French citizens in Iran.
He clarified in this regard that ‘We will propose to the European Union that those responsible for these arbitrary detentions be sanctioned by the EU in the coming months.’
The European Parliament also recently, on January 23rd (4th of Bahman), issued a resolution calling on the Islamic Republic to release EU citizens imprisoned in Iran, including French writer Olivier Grondou, French teacher Cécile Kohler, Grondou’s partner Jacques Paris, and Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian citizen.
Olivier Grondou was arrested on October 12, 2022, at his residence in Shiraz, coinciding with the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ protest movement.
