Gazprom demands compensation from Poland
Gazprom, the Russian oil and gas energy giant, has filed a complaint against Polish companies in the St. Petersburg court, seeking financial compensation worth over 900 million dollars.
According to a Reuters report on March 8th, the reason for the compensation request has not been disclosed, but Gazprom, claiming loss of income or the counterpart’s evasion of previous payment commitments, has engaged in legal cases with multiple energy companies from Central European countries.
Two years ago, Russia asked Poland to pay for fuel transit from the Yamal gas pipeline in Russian rubles, and after Warsaw refused, Moscow cut off the gas supply.
Poland, an ally of the US and Ukraine and a NATO member, declared the termination of the gas transit contract, which was supposed to continue until 2045, by refusing to meet Russia’s demand.
