German Chancellor: Serious criminals should be deported even if they are from Afghanistan or Syria

Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, stated today that serious criminals should be deported even if they have come from Afghanistan or Syria. Mr. Scholz made these remarks following the widespread reactions in the country after the murder of a police officer by an Afghan refugee in the city of Mannheim.

Mr. Scholz also mentioned that glorifying terrorist acts goes against all German values, and in the future, refugees involved may face deportation as a punishment.

In his speech in the German Parliament, he said, let me be clear, when someone who has sought refuge in our country commits the most severe crimes, it angers me. Such criminals should be deported, even if they have come from Syria or Afghanistan.

Germany has halted the deportation of Afghan refugees since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, and Syrian refugees are also not deported from Germany because Syria is not considered safe due to the prolonged civil war.
