Germany’s Foreign Minister: Europe should not turn a blind eye to the tensions between China and Taiwan
Germany’s Foreign Minister said Europe should not turn a blind eye to the tensions between China and Taiwan because military tension in this region is the worst possible scenario for the global economy.
Annalena Baerbock, during her visit to China, supported the remarks of Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, who took a firmer stance compared to French President Emmanuel Macron during her recent trip to Beijing, while also calling for the de-risking of Europe-China relations.
Germany’s Foreign Minister noted that Europe should maintain its close contact with China, which is the largest trading partner of the union, but at the same time, learn from the Ukraine war to eliminate unhealthy dependencies on China.
She added that this does not mean cutting ties, but rather minimizing the risks of this relationship and understanding that economic dependency can also pose risks.
While Mr. Macron has urged the European Union to reduce its reliance on the United States, Germany’s Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of a global military alliance with allied countries that share similar standards.
