German Parliament Announces Agreement on Significant Military Increase

The German parliament announced an agreement for a significant military increase in the country.

This is considered a massive change for Germany and could impact the defensive framework of the European Union.

More than two-thirds of parliament members agreed to the proposal to increase the defense budget in today’s vote on Tuesday, March 19.

This law exempts Germany’s defense and security budget from strict public debt rules to provide a budget equivalent to 500 billion euros, or 547 billion dollars, to improve Germany’s defense systems.

Today’s vote is considered a historic move for Germany, which traditionally has not favored debt.

Given the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine and Donald Trump’s lack of commitment to strengthening NATO and defending the European Union, the approval of this law could have an impact across the European continent.

However, at least two-thirds of the representatives from the country’s 16 states in the upper house, the Bundesrat, must also agree to this bill for it to become law.

This vote is scheduled to take place on Friday.
