Germany will not recognize the Palestinian state
Canada intends to recognize the Palestinian state this fall, but Germany will not accompany such a move
Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor from the Christian Democratic Party, reiterated after meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Berlin that Germany, unlike countries like Canada or France, will not recognize a Palestinian state for now
Merz said in a joint press conference with Carney, ‘We will not join this initiative. In the current situation, we do not see the necessary conditions for the official recognition of such a state as fulfilled in any way’
Germany considers recognizing the Palestinian state as one of the last steps towards achieving a two-state solution, a solution where Israelis and Palestinians can live peacefully side by side
In contrast, Carney announced in late July that his country intends to recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, has a similar intention
Carney explained Canada’s decision with the argument that the prospect of achieving a two-state solution is becoming dimmer every day
