Gholamhossein Karbaschi was sentenced to one year in prison and a two-year ban from media activities.
Branch One of the Tehran Criminal Court sentenced Gholamhossein Karbaschi, the chief editor of the Hammihan newspaper, to one year of imprisonment and a two-year ban from any media activities in a preliminary ruling.
According to the court’s issued verdict, the accusation of publishing false information was deemed proven; however, the execution of the one-year prison sentence has been suspended for five years considering Karbaschi’s age and social conditions.
This case was formed following the publication of several reports and notes in the Hammihan newspaper, including articles about the arrest of children and teenagers during protests and violations of medical privacy. This newspaper had previously been suspended by the decision of the Press Supervisory Board.
The court acquitted Karbaschi of other charges due to the lack of proven malicious intent. This preliminary ruling is subject to appeal.
