Google is in talks with publishers to evaluate AI tools for journalists

A spokesperson for the company announced that Google intends to evaluate AI tools for writing news articles and is negotiating with news organizations to use these tools to assist journalists.

The Google spokesperson did not mention any publishers by name, but The New York Times reported that Google has had discussions with The Washington Post and the owner of The Wall Street Journal.

According to the Google spokesperson, these AI tools can help journalists in selecting headlines or writing in different styles to enhance their work and productivity, and this is in the early stages of idea evaluation. It is completely clear that these tools cannot replace the fundamental role of journalists in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles.

However, some anonymous executives have described this as troubling. The AI tool internally launched at Google is called Genesis.
